The RS4 is Audi's highest performance version of the A4 vehicle, placing above even the high performance S4. The RS4 was first introduced in 2000 as a station wagon and was built on the B5 platform. This first generation was only available in European markets. A 2.7-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine featuring enlarged turbochargers and intercoolers, modified heads, new induction and exhaust powered this first generation RS. The RS4 was offered with a six speed manual transmission as well as the Quattro all wheel drive system. This first generation of the RS4 ceased production in 2001 with only several units being sold as 2002 models.

The RS4 wouldn't return for a second generation until 2005. When the RS4 did return from its hiatus, it was based on the Audi A4 platform. The new car was first available to European customers in the summer of 2005 but it was also introduced to American Customers in early 2006 with sales starting in the spring of 2006. This second generation will not be available in just the station wagon body, as it will have a convertible version that will be available a bit later. The new RS4 is powered by a 4.2 liter V8 FSI engine. Though this is not a turbocharged engine, it is still very powerful providing 414 horsepower. Audi has also stated that these vehicles can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds. The RS4 is considered to be an outstanding contender in the high performance market. Though this is the first time that the RS4 will be available in the American market, Audi expects that the second generation will do well in all markets.
